Bond denied for former UA basketball player Darius Miles

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (WBRC) - A judge denied bond Wednesday morning for former UA basketball player Darius Miles.

Miles is charged with capital murder for the fatal shooting of 23-year-old Jamea Harris. She was shot and killed on Tuscaloosa’s Strip in January.

Tuscaloosa County Circuit Judge Daniel Pruet said the bond issue might be revisited at a later time.

The bond hearing for Darius Miles started at 9 a.m. Wednesday. The judge spent the first 40 minutes going through discovery on some issues such as gunshot tests and surveillance video.

Judge Daniel Pruet then proceeded to hear both sides on whether Miles deserved to be out on bond or remain in jail. Darius Miles’ attorneys argued for bond because they said ‘Miles was God-fearing, family oriented and not the shooter. Prosecutors argued against it, alleging Miles had his gun delivered to the scene. In the end the judge denied bond. With the ruling Darius Miles cried in court before he was led away. Afterwards, we spoke with a supporter of Darius Miles and Jamea Harris’ mom.

“We’re very satisfied with the judge and the outcome. I don’t have words right now. I just don’t,” said Jamea Harris’ mom DeClarla Heard.

“Well, I’m a little heart-wrenching because I was looking forward for Darius moving forward and coming home and getting prepared but right now we just have to give it all in God’s hands because we know Darius is a great kid and only God can control the situation here,” said Dimingus Bundy who is the father of one of Darius Miles’ childhood friends.

Court documents show Miles aided and abetted Michael Davis in the shooting death. Davis has also been arrested and charged with capital murder.

The documents also state Miles admitted to providing Davis with the handgun immediately prior to the shooting.

Davis is also being held without bond at the Tuscaloosa County Jail.
