Kiwanis Covington County Fair begins next week
ANDALUSIA, Ala. (WTVY) - The Covington County Kiwanis Club donates $40,000 dollars to area agencies that help with children’s needs every year. Much of those funds are raised at the annual fair.
In the midst of the pandemic, many of those agencies are in need of support. And that was the driving force behind the decision to continue the event.
"This year’s offered a challenge,” President of the Fair Board Don Cotton told WTVY.
Cotton said the board spent a lot of time monitoring how other fairs were handling the pandemic, before it came to the decision that the fair must go on.
“Kids first,” Cotton said. "We just felt an obligation to that we needed to do what we could, even if it was a limited bases to help those agencies.”
Some of the fair favorites-- like pageants and entertainment--- had to be canceled because people tend to congregate together to watch.
“We did away with our livestock,” Cotton said. "But one thing we had to do away with this year is one of our more popular segments of the entire fair, and that’s the arts and crafts.”
The fair will have concessions and the fair rides are also spaced out.
"The James Gang workers will maintain the lines getting on the rides, and they maintain the lines getting off the rides in a way they don’t intermingle,” Cotton said.
Workers will disinfect rides after each use. Masks and social distancing will be enforced as much as possible.
Cotton says he doesn’t know what kind of crowd to expect, but he hopes people will come out and support the event..
Admission is $3. That price does not include concessions or arm bands.
The fair is set for October 19th through the 25th.
Gates will open Monday through Friday at 6 p.m. ; Saturday at 3:30 p.m.; and Sunday will be rides only from 1 to 5 p.m.
